Students win award for tsunami model

TAMBARAM: A model devised by two students of Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Indira Nagar near Selaiyur has bagged the Industrial award at the Southern India Science Fair 2006 held in Pondicherry recently.

A. Baranidharan and V. Subhashini's model tsunami warning system fetched them the award. The event in Pondicherry was organised by the Director of School Education of the Pondicherry Government and Visvesarayya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore. The model had earlier won the first place at a Kancheepuram district level exhibition and also at the State level exhibition held at Erode in the first week of January.

After listening to their presentation, judges have nominated it for presentation at the national level science meet to be held shortly. According to the model, sensors and detectors on the seabed predict sea quakes, and through buoys placed on the water surface, signals are transmitted to a satellite.

The ground control room in turn gets alerted and could start to evacuate people from tsunami-prone areas, the students explained.
